When I first moved to Japan, I assumed I'd eventually need to buy a car. Coming from a car-dependent country, it seemed like an essential part of adult life. However, I quickly discovered that Japan's public transportation system makes car ownership entirely optional.
The trains here run with incredible precision. The network is so comprehensive that I can reach virtually any destination with a combination of trains and short walks. Even in the rain, the covered walkways and station-connected buildings mean I rarely need to brave the elements.
Not owning a car has simplified my life considerably. No parking fees, no maintenance costs, and no worries about navigation or traffic. Instead, I can use my commute time productively - reading, coding, or simply enjoying the changing scenery of urban Japan.
